Why “Normal” Isn’t Normal: The Truth About Leaking Pee
You laugh, you leak.
You sneeze, you leak.
You try to jump on a trampoline with your kids—and, well, you know how that ends.
If you’re nodding your head right now, you’re not alone. But here’s the thing: just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s normal—and it certainly doesn’t mean you have to live with it.
At Body Works Women’s Health & Wellness, we hear it all the time:
“I’ve had kids, so this just comes with the territory, right?”
“My mom dealt with it too, so I guess it runs in the family.”
“I just wear a liner every day now. No big deal.”
But friend, it is a big deal—because you deserve better.
Let's Talk About What’s Really Going On
Leaking pee—whether it’s with sneezing, laughing, lifting, running, or just trying to make it to the bathroom in time—is often a sign that your pelvic floor muscles aren’t working as they should.
These muscles are part of your core system. They support your bladder, uterus, and rectum. And when they're weakened, overly tight, or not coordinating well, leaks can happen.
This is incredibly common after childbirth, but we also see it in women who’ve never had kids, especially during perimenopause or after hysterectomy.
So what’s causing it?
Pregnancy and childbirth (yes, even if it was years ago)
Chronic coughing or constipation
Hormonal changes
High-impact workouts or improper core training
Poor coordination between your core and pelvic floor
Why Panty Liners Aren’t the Answer
Sure, liners and pads might make leaking less stressful, but they’re a band-aid, not a solution.
Wearing them long-term can actually normalize the issue in your mind—which means you stop seeking help. You start accepting discomfort, embarrassment, and even isolation from the activities you love.
But here’s what we want you to hear:
You don’t have to “just deal with it.”
You can heal.
So What Is Normal?
Normal is:
Being able to laugh with your kids and not worry about your pants
Making it through your workout without a second pair of leggings
Sleeping through the night without planning for bathroom trips
Leaving the house without mapping the nearest public restroom
Normal is freedom. And that’s what we’re here to help you get back.
How Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Can Help
At our Greer SC physical therapy clinic, pelvic floor therapy is what we do. We work with women every day who thought leaking was just their “new normal.”
Using a combination of manual therapy, targeted exercises, core coordination training, and real-life movement strategies, we help retrain the muscles that support your bladder so they function how they’re supposed to.
Every treatment plan is customized to your body, your history, and your goals. Whether you want to return to CrossFit or simply sneeze with confidence, we’re here for it.
And yes—you’ll get to ask all the awkward questions. No judgment. Just real answers and a plan that works.
You’re Not Broken. You’re Just Not Fully Supported—Yet.
Dr. Ashlee De Nooy, founder of Body Works Women’s Health & Wellness, started this clinic because she experienced firsthand what it’s like to feel dismissed and defeated by “common” postpartum problems.
Her mission?
To help women across the Upstate realize they don’t have to live with leaking pee—or any other “normal” dysfunctions.
If you’re dealing with leaks, urgency, or constant bathroom mapping...
If you’re skipping workouts, limiting water, or living in black leggings...
It’s time for a change. And it starts with one visit.
