Let’s talk Pelvic Organ Prolapse. Are you at risk?

Research has indicated that approximately 50% of women after childbirth lose some of the support needed in the pelvic floor leading to various degrees of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The risk increased with age as well as each additional pregnancy.

Sounds kind of scary, right?!

After learning a bit about pelvic organ prolapse, I hope this puts you more at ease.

So what is it? and how do you know if you have it?

A pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a condition in which the structure/wall of the vaginal canal becomes less supportive. This allows the uterus, bladder, rectum or upper part of the vaginal canal to put pressure against the walls of the vagina by pressing into it.

What are the Symptoms?

You may feel any of the following:

  • Difficulty with peeing or pooping

  • Urinary leakage

  • Urinating more than usual

  • Suddenly needing to urinate.

  • Leaking urine with sleep

  • Low back or Pelvic pain

  • Painful intercourse

  • Feeling like something is falling out.

So what can be done about this? What is the treatment?

Research published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology demonstrated that pelvic floor muscle training was effective at decreasing the severity of POP. In smaller grades it actually reduced the prolapse. Pelvic floor muscle training is the first line treatment! Prolapse can be treated surgically but reoccurs in 58% of women, and one-third undergo at least one additional surgical procedure.

It all begins with a thorough assessment to determine where your deficits lie.

A full body assessment is needed to determine your specific issues. At Body Works we formulate a customized program with the focus of optimizing your pelvic health. The use of real time ultrasound is integrated to assess the effectiveness and function of these vital core muscles.

A properly graded exercise program is vital to transition from symptomatic to symptom-free.
