Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Appointment

What to NOT DO at your Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Appointment

November 16, 20232 min read

Alright let’s get right to the point. Pelvic floor physical therapists are in the profession because we WANT to help YOU. There is nothing we love more than seeing our patients find success, relief, and freedom from their symptoms! But before you come to your first appointment, here is a list of things to NOT DO.

Do NOT apologize for not shaving or not grooming “down there”.

When we say we don’t care and it doesn’t matter to us your pubic hair situation, we truly mean it! That is not what is important to our care and our assessment. What IS important is that you don’t apologize for the vulva and vagina you have.

Do NOT speak in code about your symptoms.

Sometimes it’s a little embarrassing to say out loud the symptoms you are having or talk about your pee, poop, or sex life, but the more specific you can be, the more we can help you! You don’t have to use code words or be polite or apologize for what you are about to say. Trust us, we’ve heard it all, it doesn’t phase us, and this is why we have private rooms and private treatment space to allow you to speak freely!

Do NOT skip your appointment because you are on your period.

First of all, we can still do a pelvic floor assessment even if you are on your period, and we are totally fine with this! This is just a normal part of being a vagina owner! Second, if you really don’t want to have a pelvic floor assessment while on your period, there are still so many things that we can talk about, assess, and treat that aren’t involving the vagina, so don’t miss out on your care just because your period has arrived.

We want you to feel like YOU, and we want you to feel comfortable being YOU at your appointment. No apologies needed, no apologies for having a vagina, and keep the talk real. We are trained and ready to help you just as you are!
